What Is Thatching?

If you call it thatching, de-thatching, or power raking, it’s all the same thing and hugely beneficial for your lawn. A thin thatch layer, less than 1/2 inch thick is beneficial to lawn health. It acts as an organic mulch to help conserve soil moisture and protect against big fluctuations in soil temperature. A thin thatch layer allows water, nutrients and air to penetrate into soil and reach waiting plant roots. For cool-season grasses the best time to thatch your lawn is early spring or early fall. For warm-season grasses, dethatch in late spring through early summer (after the second mowing). That's when your grass is growing most vigorously. Not sure what kind of grass you have, don’t worry, most people don’t know, but we do! Give Greener Pastures Lawn Care a call and schedule your free consultation.

Of course we will also mow you lawn, re-edge and clean up your garden and flower beds. It’s common that the borders of your lawn will need redefining, we can help. We also provide some pruning and trimming trees and shrubs dependent on the size, height and diameter of your trees. We will always keep you informed of the work that needs to be addressed on your property.

What Is Aeration?

Aeration reduces compaction, and oxidizes the soile allowing the roots to take the appropriate nutrients and grow as quickly as possible. The lawn is perforated with small holes to give air, water and other nutrients a direct route to the roots of your lawn. The best time to aerate your lawn is when your grass is in it’s peak growing period so it can recover quickly, think early spring or fall for cool season grasses and late spring through early summer for warmer grasses. If you have high traffic areas or heavy clay soil, you will want to aerate your lawn yearly.
